Objective 5a Flashcards
Another name for Epithelial Karatitis:
Herpes Simplex Keratitis
General description of Keratitis:
Infection and inflammation of the cornea
Describe Epithelial Keratitis:
Very contagious and common. Dentritic ulcer (many fingers that look like the branches of a tree)
Give symptoms of Bacterial Keratitis:
Eyelids stuck together.
Pain and sensitivity to light, redness, tearing and decrease in vision.
Name signs of Bacterial Keratitis:
Cornea is cloudy. May also cause abscesses in the stroma.
Yellowish-white ulcers, oval pus formations surrounded by a relatively clear cornea.
Pseudomonas ulcers appear irregular and have pus with discharge.
What are causes of bacterial keratitis:
Wearing lenses overnight, poor lens care, contaminated makeup, Stapylococcus and pneumococcus
What are signs of fungal keratitis:
Greyish-white ulcerations with indistinct feathery margins and surrounding satallite lesions.
What causes fungal keratitis?
Usually preceeded by ocular trauma involving vegtable matter such as a tree branch.
Signs of Viral Keratitits (SPK) Adenovirus:
Fine, scattered areas of loss of epithelial cells, lesions slightly elevated and usually look like tiny grey pinpoints.
Sypmtoms of Adenovirus:
Forgien body sensation, tearing and light sensitivity.
What is Neurotrophic Keratitis (NK)
NK is a degenerative disease.
Corneal sensitivity reduction, spontaneous epithelium breakdown and impairment of corneal healing.
What can cause Neurotrophic keratitis (NK):
Herpetic keratitis, diabetes, ophthalmic and neurosurgical procedures and trigeminal damage (CNV)
Exposure Keratitis is due to:
Dryness of the cornea caused by incomplete or inadequate eyelid closure.
Drug Induced Keratitis is :
(always accompanied by primary corneal diseases) caused by the application and ABUSE of systemic and topical drugs on the ocular surface.
