- when a person expresses disagreement with the cause of the action, given by an authority figure
- it is the first step to disobedience, testing the true extent of the authority figure
- it can also become part of moral strain

- the act of not obeying a command
- it’s a juvenile desire to resist a command, usually because an individual simply does not want to obey the authority figure
