obedience Flashcards
what is obedience
obedience is the changing of behaviours due to a direct order given by an authority figure with the ability to punish if disobeyed.
what are some factors that differ obedience from conformity
obedience usually comes from a direct order given by one specific person
- obedience allows someone to put the blame on someone else and they don’t take responsibility
- obedience usually occurs because of a person in a higher status ( more authority)
what is the study for obedience
milgram
what was milgrams aim
Milgrams aim was to test obedience in American people
what is the ‘germans are evil’ hypothesis
This is a dispositional explanation for the actions committed by the nazis in the holocaust. This theory suggests that German people have a personality deficit where they obey any orders from a higher authority.
What are some weaknesses of Milgram
Milgram lacked internal validity- Orne and Holland + Perry
Milgram had bad ethics
Strengths of Milgram
had good external validity- Hofling
has good replicability
what study was used as a counter to internal validity
Sheridan and King
similar study to milgram, had similar results= proves milgrams internal val
what was the counter for external validity
the tasks in milgram were small and meaningless and didn’t reflect real- life situations
what were the findings of Milgram
100% went to 300 volts
65% went to 450 volts
at 180 volts learner begged to be released
at 300 volts there was silence
what factors allowed good control
rigged draw, recorded screams, one confederate
