Obedience Flashcards
Obedience:
Where you follow an individuals direct orders. Normally from an authority figure and they have the power to punish.
Baseline Procedure:
40 American Men, a confederate wearing a white lab coat. Another confederate named Mr Wallace was there. They drew to see who was the teacher and who was the learner but the participant is always going to be the teacher. Mr Wallace also said he had a heart condition. They were taken into a room where there was a shock generator.
Research Support:
Strength: A French documentary recreated Milgram’s obedience study called Le Jeu de la Mort (the game of death). The participants were paid to deliver electric shocks (which were fake) to fake actors. 80% of the participants delivered up to 460v. They exhibited nervous laughing and nail biting. Therefore, this supports Milgram’s finding.
Low Internal Validity:
Limitation: Milgram said that 75% of the participants believed that the shocks were real. Two thirds of the participant. Therefore, the participants may have just been reacting to demand characteristics.
Ethical Issues:
Limitation: Physical and psychological issues, misinformed consent.
