What is Lochia?
Lochia is the typical vaginal discharge after birth
How long does lochia last?
Continues for about 3-5 weeks after birth and up to 6 weeks after birth
Lochia Rubra
Days 3-5 after birth, Dark Red blood
Lochia Serosa
Days 5-10 after birth, Light pink which has old RBCs in it, WBCs, and tissue
Lochia Alba
2-6 weeks after birth, yellowish brown, WBCs
Causes of heavier lochia
May be heavier on the first few days, and activity and breastfeeding may increase the flow of the lochia
abnormal lochia after birth
- saturating more than one pad per hour
- passing clots bigger than an egg
- foul smelling odor

Perineal Care after birth
- use a peri-bottle with warm water over your stiches for cleansing, rinsing from front to back
- after using the bathroom, wipe from front to back
- change peripad every time you go to the bathroom
How long does it take for the stiches to dissolve?
2-3 weeks
2nd degree tear of perineum
tore midway down the perineum
3rd degree tear of the perineum
tore more than 1/2 way down the perineum
4th degree tear of the perineum
tore all the way through the perineum
Caution/Monitor with 3rd and 4th degree tears of the perineum
do not let them get constipated
Pain Management tactics after birth
- Ice can be used on the perineum for swelling and pain in the first 24 hours
- Doctor has medications and topical ointments ordered for the pain
Why do you want to do fundal massages?
- Alleviate uterine atony
- restore uterine muscle tone
- You want to check for firmness of the uterus
Postpartum period
interval between birth and the return of the reproductive organs to return to their normal non pregnant state

return of the uterus to a non pregnant state after birth
