- quick stop
- Drop blades in water vertically and hold perpendicular to keel
Hold water
From “Oars” or “Toss Oars”, place oars in boat on side thwart, blades forward
Boat the oars
- put oars in rowlocks
Out oars
- take oars out of rowlocks
- place oars in boat with blades forward
- place sweep oar blade aft
Boat the oars
- bowmen complete the stroke, swing oars forward, and boat them
- Standby with boat hooks to fend off or receive line
In bows
- all stroke and follow stroke oar
Give way together
- Complete the stroke
- Stop rowing, drop blade into water vertically, and gradually swing into a position at right angles to the keel, taking care not to overstress rowlock
Hold water
Given when approaching a landing
- Complete stroke
- Toss oars to about 45 degrees and boat oars, forward oars first
- Unship the rowlocks
Way enough
Complete stroke and carefully allow oars to trail alongside, fore and aft
Trail oars
Row in the astern direction
Backwater
- row backward at end of stroke
Back oars / back water
- finish stroke and allow oars to drift fore and aft
Trail oars
The trim blades of the oars are brought alongside the boat and left trailing in the water in single banked boats fitted with swivel rowlocks
Trail Oars
- bowman complete stroke
- toss oars and boat them
- get boat hook and prepare bow for docking/recovery
In bows
- place oars in rowlocks directly from the boated position or from “Standby Oars” position
- oars horizontal at right angles to keel, blades flat
Out oars
- draw in oars until it lays on opposite gunwale
Bank oars
- bowman shoves off with blunt end of boat hook
Shove off
- bring oars from vertical to horizontal position in rowlocks and blades out of the water
Let fall
- inboard bowman pushes off using boathook
- when ordered, bowman releases sea painter
Shove off
- complete stroke and place oars vertically
Up oars / toss oars
- Complete the stroke, come to “Oars” position
- Raise oars smartly to the vertical
- Rest handles on the footing and trim blades fore-and-aft
Toss oars
Used to turn boat more quickly.
- Ordered side completes stroke and holds water
- Other sides continues to row
Port / Starboard Hold Water
- each crewmember clears oar
- ships rowlock
- places blade flat on gunwale forward inboard of person in front of them
Stand by the Oars
- stop
- raise the oars horizontal to the water
Oars
Given from “Oars” position. Allows oarsmen to rest when laying to.
- oars drawn through the rowlock and rested on opposite gunwale
Bank oars
- blades of oars are swung forward and dipped into water
- at the command “together”, the stroke is started
- At the end of the stroke, blades are feathered, swung forward, and another stroke is started
Give way together
- Put oars in rowlocks
- hold handle and loom
- rest blade on gunwale
Standby Oars
Complete the stroke, stop rowing and bring oars horizontal, at right angles to keel, with blades held flat
Oars
- When rowing ahead, complete stroke and then commence to back water, gradually increasing the depth of the blades
