OA Flashcards
what is the definition of OA
joint failure caused by -
articular cartilage loss
increasing thickness and sclerosis of the subchondral bony plate
outgrowth of osteophytes at the joint margin
mild synovitis
weakness of the muscle bridging the joint
what is the MC type of arthritis
OA
what is the leading cause of disability in the elderly
OA
what is the path of the articular cartilage loss
metabolic articular cartilage deficit (hyperACTIVE)
softening, chipping, fibrillations, clefts, and erosions progress to full thickness cartilage loss
can chondrocytes repair?
only slightly…theyre damaged
is the syovitis a big deal?
it is very mild (disease considered non-inflammatory)
since the bone adjacent to the joint reinforces itself with subchondral sclerosis and osteophytes, what will you see?
large subchondral bone cysts may develop
sclerotic bone is formed in the floor of cartilage lesions
marginal osteophytes of new cartilage develop and ossify
commonly affected joints in OA
c spine lumbosacral spine hip knee first MTP DIP (herbdens) PIP (bouchards) base of thumb
is the joint pain activity related?
yes
when is their joint stiffness?
in the morning it is brief - in contrast to RA
what are some PE findings
joint margin tenderness
hip restricted internal rotation and abduction
