O lvl chapter 1 cell structure and organisation Flashcards
what do cells do?
they take in raw material then process the raw material to make new molecules, new molecules are then either used by the cell or transported to other parts of the body
what are the different microscope and micrographs
microscope:
light microscope, magnify up to 1000x
electron microscope, magnify more than 200 000x
micrograph:
light micrograph, come out as coloured images
electron micrograph, come out as black and white
to get a clearer picture of how a cell is constructed, we cut the cells in different planes. What planes are there?
longitudinal and transverse
what is protoplasm?
a complex jelly-like substance. chemical activities that allow the cell to survive and grow are carried out in the protoplasm.
What does the protoplasm of cells consists of?
cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole and nucleus
what is a cell membrane and what are the functions of it?
it surrounds the cytoplasm of the cell. The cell membrane is made up of lipids and proteins. It is a partially permeable membrane. Hence, allowing only some substances to pass through it . Hence, the cell membrane controls the movement of substance in and out
