digestive system Flashcards
what are the parts of the digestive system
mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus
what the different food types
carbohydrates, protein and fats
what enzyme breaks down protein
protease
what enzyme breaks down carbohydrates
carbohydrase
what enzyme breaks down fats
lipase
what is the end product of fats
fatty acids and glycerol
what is the end product of carbohydrates
simple sugars/ glucose
what is the end product of protein
amino acids
which part of the digestive system contains carbohydrase
mouth, small intestine
which part of the digestive system contains lipase
small intestine
which part of the digestive system contains protease
stomach, small intestine
what is the purpose of the mouth
for physical digestion to take place. however it contains saliva which contains carbohydrase so it breaks down a bit of carbohydrates
what is physical digestion
for the food substance to be broken UP for more surface area to increase rate of digestion
what is chemical digestion
a new product is formed through digestion with the use of enzymes
what is the purpose of the oesophagus
to transport food from the mouth to the stomach by peristalsis
what is the purpose of the stomach
releases protease to break DOWN proteins and a churning action is involved to break up food into smaller pieces for more surface area to be digested.
what is different in the protease in the stomach and small intestine
the one sin the stomach do better in acidic environment while the small intestine’s do better in neutral environment
what is the purpose of small intestine
contains villi, breaks down food into simpler substances, releases ALL enzymes
what is the purpose of villi
villi helps the increases rate of digestion.
what is the purpose of large intestine
absorb water from undigested food
what is the purpose of rectum
stores my undigested food.
