A huge, slow moving sheet of ice that once covered earth.
These glaciers helped shape many of the hills, plains, lakes and rivers in NY
Coastal Plain
A flat, level land along a coast.
NYC is located near the ocean
Parts of the city are on the coastal plain, where the land is flat and level (Long Island)
Environment
The water, land, and air that surround us.
Region
An area that has one or more features in common.
Hemisphere
Is one half of Earths surface
Equator
An imaginary line that divides Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Prime Meridian
Another imaginary line that divides Earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres
Plateau
Is an area that rises above the nearby land
What effects did glaciers have on NY’s landforms?
As glaciers move, they push rocks and soil, flattening the land.
As the climate grew warmer, the glaciers melted, and created new landforms such as valleys and islands.
What are NY’s landforms?
Upland Region - Adirondack Mountains
Lowland Region - Erie-Ontario (fruit and vegetables and farms found here because the soil is rich in soil.
Plateau - Appalachian and Catskills
Coastal Plain - Staten Island and Long Island
Describe NY’s location.
NY state is on the continent of North America and in the northeastern part of the US.
It is in the Northern and Western hemispheres.
