Nwoye (Okonkwo's Son) Flashcards
Okonkwo forces his ideas of masculinity onto Nwoye, and without the motivation of a lazy father, he falls into depression.
’ Nwoye was developing into a sad faced youth’
While it is apparent that Okonkwo wants success for his son, it is also clear that he has not catered to his personality, and instead is violent and abusive
’ I will not have a son who cannot hold up his head in the gathering of the clan. I would sooner strangle him with my own hands’
While Ikemefuna is around Nwoye acts how he knows his father wants him to act, despite the fact that it is clearly not him.
‘Nwoye would feign annoyance and grumble about women’
‘He knew that his father wanted him to be a man’
Despite this, when Ikemefuna dies, his tether snaps. It seems the only thing keeping the father son relationship together was Ikemefuna, and when he dies the fall apart.
‘Something seemed to give way inside him, like the snapping of a bow’
