NWC and ASC Flashcards
Consciousness
is our awareness to internal and external environments at any given moment in time.
State of consciousness
refers to an individual’s level of awareness of internal and external stimuli at any given moment. There are two states of consciousness: normal waking consciousness and altered state of consciousness.
Normal Waking Consciousness
is a state of consciousness characterised by clear and organised alertness to internal and external stimuli.
Altered State of Consciousness
is a state of consciousness that is characteristically different from normal waking consciousness in terms of awareness, sensation and perception.
Controlled processes
are actions that require a high level of conscious awareness, attention and mental effort
Automatic processes
are actions that require little conscious awareness or mental effort, and do not interfere with performance on other activities
Divided attention
is when an individual simultaneously focuses on two or more stimuli, or simultaneously undertakes two or more tasks
Selective attention
refers to the ability to redirect our attention focus to a specific or limited range of stimuli while ignoring others
Awareness in NWC
- High awareness of external and internal environments
- Able to complete controlled and automatic processes
Content limitations in NWC
- Able to control thoughts
- Able to process many different pieces of information at the same time
Sensation and perception in NWC
- Able to accurately perceive the world
- Experience sensations that are real
Cognitive distortions in NWC
- Able to think logically and clearly
- Able to memorise and recall information accurately
Emotions in NWC
-Experience appropriate emotions
Self control in NWC
-Able to coordinate a sequence of movements and include fine motor skills
Perception of time in NWC
-Able to fairly accurately perceive the amount of time that has passed
Awareness in ASC
- Low level of awareness of external and internal environments
- Limited ability to complete controlled processes and some automatic processes are impaired
Content limitations in ASC
- Unable to block unacceptable or undesirable thought from entering consciousness
- The amount of information processed is limited
- Difficult to divide attention, even between automatic processes
Sensation and perception in ASC
- Experience distorted perceptions of the world; may experience hallucinations or delusions
- Reduces or heightens the experience of pain
Cognitive distortions in ASC
- Experience illogical thoughts that are fragmented
- Unable to remember information accurately
Emotions in ASC
-Emotions may be dulled or heightened or not appropriate
Self-control in ASC
- Unable to coordinate actions and behaviours
- Loss of inhibitions
- More open to suggestion
Time perception in ASC
-Unable to accurately perceive time; time may appear to pass slower or faster
Awareness in AIS
- depresses the nervous system
- decreases level of awareness
- difficulty concentrating
Content limitations in AIS
- type of information perceieved may be broader
- unrelated, obscure, irrational thoughts
- ‘alcohol myopia’
- impares functioning of cerebellum (responsible for balance and co-ordination)
- reaction times, thinking and perception affected
- controlled processes difficult
