Substances in foods that your body needs to grow, have energy, and stay healthy.
Nutrients
Minerals, Vitamins, Water, Protein, Carbohydrates, Fats.
6 Basic Nutrients
A unit of heat that measures the energy available in food.
Calorie
The sugar & starches in food that provide your body with energy.
Carbohydrates
Provide the body with long lasting energy. Ex: bread, pasta, whole grains.
Complex Carbohydrates
Provide the body with quick energy. Ex: sugar
Simple Carbohydrates
Helps the body grow, provides some energy, and keeps your skin healthy.
Fat
Found in meat, poultry, butter and dairy products. This is the bad fat.
Saturated Fat
Found in plant-based food such as vegetable oils, nuts, and olives. This is the good kind of fat.
Unsaturated Fat
The waxy, fat-like substance that the body uses to build cells and make other substances.
Cholesterol
good; protects from heart disease.
HDL
bad; sticks to walls of blood vessels & contributes to heart disease.
LDL
Compounds that help to regulate body systems.
Vitamins
Substances the body uses to form healthy bones teeth, and other body organs healthy.
Minerals
The process by which the body gets energy from food.
