A substance other than food that changes the structure/function of the body or mind
Drugs
The body’s need for larger amounts of a drug to produce the same effect
Tolerance
Taking more of a drug than the body can tolerate
Overdose
A drug that speeds up the body’s functions
Stimulants
Strong stimulant that speeds up the nervous system
Amphetamines
Drugs that slow down the body’s functions and reactions, including heart and breathing rates
Depressants
Drugs that distort moods, thoughts, and senses
Hallucinogens
Drugs that get rid of pain and dull the senses
EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE
Narcotics
The vapors of chemicals that are sniffed or inhaled to get a “high”
Can cause Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome
4 Categories: Aerosols, Solvents, Gases, and Nitrates
Inhalants
Effects that happen instantly and leave shortly after
Short-term Effects
Effects that take a long time to happen
Long-term Effects
An instruction written by a medical practitioner that authorizes a patient to be provided a medicine or treatment
Prescription
Found on the shelves of local pharmacy or grocery stores
Over-the-counter (OTC)
Taking or using medicine in a way that is not intended
Drug Misuse
Intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthy or illegal
