Q

Explain what fats do for the body, and list a food that is rich in that nutrient?

A

They store energy, insulate us and protect our vital organs. They act as messengers, helping proteins do their jobs. They also start chemical reactions that help control growth, immune function, reproduction and other aspects of basic metabolism.

Q

Explain what proteins do for the body and list a food rich in protein.

A

Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.
Chicken, eggs, and steak are all high in protein.

Q

Explain what vitamins do for the body and name some foods rich in vitamins.

A

Basically, your body needs vitamins in order to work properly, and it needs different vitamins to help perform specific activities like produce energy, protect cells from damage, guide mineral utilization, and regulate cell and tissue growth. If your body doesn’t get enough of the vitamins it needs, it could lead to deficiencies and altered function that over time may foster illness development.
Oranges, Nuts, Meats and Breads.

Q

What does water do for the body? Name a food rich in water?

A

It hydrates it, and is essential for all functions of the body. Drinking water also helps the skin do it’s job of regulating the body’s temperature through sweating. Feed your body. Water is essential for the proper circulation of nutrients in the body. Water serves at the body’s transportation system and when we are dehydrated things just can’t get around as well.

Q

How does sodium affect nutrition?

A

small amounts of salt on a daily basis is essential for the functioning of healthy cells.
Salt maintains the correct balance of certain fluids which bathe the cells in our bodies - essential for nerve and muscle function.
Too much salt can lead to increased blood pressure, osteoporosis - a bone-thinning disease, asthma, stomach cancer and weight gain.

Q

How does caffeine affect the body/nutrition?

A

Caffeine can cause your heart to pump faster and your breathing to quicken. You also may notice that caffeine makes you feel hyper. Caffeine can boost a person’s energy temporarily, but a lot of caffeine can also cause other, not-so-great effects: make you nervous, interrupt sound sleep, and cause stomach ache, headache, and racing heartbeat.

Q

What is the acid called that is found in protein that builds our body’s structure?

A

Amino acids.

17
Q

What nutrient is the body’s main source of energy?

A

Carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the brain. Without carbohydrates, the body could not function properly. Sources include fruits, breads and grains, starchy vegetables and sugars

18
Q

What is a “complete protein”? What food sources do they come from?

A

A source of protein that contains all nine of the essential amino acids necessary for the dietary needs of humans or other animals.
Example: Steak or chicken. Dairy and eggs can provide them, too.

19
Q

Give 2 examples of incomplete proteins that can be combined together to make a complete protein?

A

Sources of protein that do not have all 9 of the essential amino acids needed by humans (that they can’t make in their bodies).
Examples: Nuts and beans.
Combining Peanut Butter with whole wheat bread can make a complete protein.
Rice and beans can make a complete protein.

20
Q

What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fat?

A

Saturated fats are solid at room temperature, while unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature. This is because saturated and unsaturated fats differ in their chemical structures

21
Q

Explain how ingredients are listed on a nutrition label?

A

In order of highest quantity of ingredient to lowest quantity.

22
Q

List two things important to look for on a food label?

A

The number of calories – so you don’t eat too many, and the quantity or percentage of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that you are getting from it – so you can maximize your nutrition.

23
Q

What is dehydration?

A

Dehydration occurs when the amount water taken in is less than the water output by the body through sweat, urination, breathing, and pooping.
