why do we need protein?
Growth and repair, reproduction, hormones, nutrition and the immune system.
why do we need fat?
Energy, insulation and body warmth, protects vital organs, hormone production and contains essential fatty acids our bodies can’t make (but need).
why do we need carbohydrates?
For energy. When eaten the body breaks down carbohydrates and converts it to glucose, which is then absorbed into the blood
why do we need iron?
Iron is a component of haemoglobin which gives blood cells their red colour. The haemoglobin carries oxygen around the body, which is important for energy and cell maintenance.
why do we need potassium?
Lower blood pressure, keeps heart muscles healthy, improves bone health, and maintains fluid levels in body.
why do we nee magnesium?
Keeps heart and liver healthy, supports strong bones and good muscle function.
why do we need zinc?
Helps blood to clot and wounds to heal. Provides healthy skin, bones and teeth, strong immune and reproductive systems, liver function and brain development.
why do we need selenium?
Controls thyroid hormone metabolism, is an antioxidant which helps fight infection and protects against heart disease.
why do we need vitamin a?
Supports a healthy immune system and helps with the formation of ‘purple vision’ to aid night vision. Keeps mucus membranes moist.
why do we need vitamin b?
For the development of a healthy immune and nervous system, releases energy from food and helps with formation of haemoglobin.
