SPN is given in ADDITION to oral/enteral feeds

TPN is the sole source of nutrition

Parenteral Nutrition rules/considerations

A
  • Glucose must be given via central vein to prevent thrombosis
  • Enough phosphate must be provided to prevent hypophosphataemia and allow the phosphorylation of glucose
  • Fructos and Sorbitol are added to avoid hypersomolar hyperglycaemic nonketotic acidosis
  • Additives should not be added to fat emulsions unless compatibility is known
