Supplementary Parenteral Nutrition (SPN) vs Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)

SPN is given in ADDITION to oral/enteral feeds
TPN is the sole source of nutrition

Parenteral Nutrition rules/considerations
A
- Glucose must be given via central vein to prevent thrombosis
- Enough phosphate must be provided to prevent hypophosphataemia and allow the phosphorylation of glucose
- Fructos and Sorbitol are added to avoid hypersomolar hyperglycaemic nonketotic acidosis
- Additives should not be added to fat emulsions unless compatibility is known
