What is the rule of thumb for a healthy weight
Women:
100 pounds at 5ft + 5 pounds per inch
Men:
106 pounds at 5 ft + 6 pounds per inch
What is a persons BMR
1 calorie per kilogram per hour, slightly less for women due to lower muscle mass
What increases/decreases BMR
Increase: growth, infections, fever, emotional tension, extreme temperatures, elevated hormones
Decrease: aging, prolonging fasting, sleep
Interventions for dysphagia
Suction set up
HOB at 45 and 90 when eating and 30 minutes after
Provide assistance
What are some easy to swallow foods
Thickened liquids, puréed food, cooked veggies, ground meat, soup and iced fruit
What does lavage mean
Removal of stomach content

Suctioning stomach content
What position should people be for placing NG tube
Fowler position
What is a dobbhoff/corpack tube
Smaller tube only used for feeding
What is the benefit of a J tube
Bypassing the stomach, aspiration is prevented
When is a gastric residual volume a concern
Greater than 200 ml
What is TPN or hyperalimentation
Infusion of nutrition through central line
-used when pt needs complete bowel rest
-Moniter lab values closely (BUN, Liver, urine, glucose, electrolytes)
