What is Nutrition?
The process of providing or obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.
What are Nutrients?
Substances that provide nourishment essential for growth,maintenance and repair of the body.
What are the types of nutrients?
Carbohydrates,Proteins,Vitamins,Fats/Lipids & Minerals
What are Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates provides our body with energy.
Examples of Carbohydrates?
Cassava,Bread,Banana,Pasta,Sugar,Honey,Yam,Flour.
What is the disease for lack of Carbohydrates?
Marasmus: deficiency disease in babies and young children.Caused by a lack of Carbohydrates and protein
Symptoms: weight loss,dehydration, stomach shrinkage and diarrhea.
What are Complexed Carbohydrates?
Starch- main storage chemical in plants. This forms a large proportion of the carbohydrates we eat.
Cellulose- complex carbohydrate that makes up plant cell walls.
Humans cannot digest cellulose.
Glycogen- sometimes called animal starch, important storage product in animals.

What are Proteins?
Proteins are used to repair cells and for growth of new cells.
Examples of Protein
Eggs,Milk,Fish,Nuts,Meat
What is the disease for lack of Protein?
Kwashiokar- the lack of protein
Symptoms- rigid nails, dried brittle hair that falls out easily and may lose colour, enlarged abdomen,irritability, tiredness and lost of muscle mass.
What are the sub-units of acids?
Amino Acids
There are 20 different amino acids in humans.

What are Fats/Lipids?
Fats & Oils are similiar, fats are usually used for materials that are solid at room temperature.

What are the functions of Fats/Lipids?
-forms cell membranes
-supply energy during respiration
-store the fat soluble vitamins(Vitamin A, D, K, E)
-found in the skin where they give good insulation.
What are the two types of organic chemicals of Fats/Lipids?
-Fatty Acids
-Glycerol
What are Vitamins?
Vitamin are organic substances that play an important role in the control of metabolism.
What is Vitamin A?
- a fat soluble vitamin.
Food Sources of Vitamin A
fish liver oil, egg yolk , butter , cheese , red palm oil, carrots, green leafy vegetables.
