Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the basic unit of life in all living organisms.
What are Structures of Cells?
Uni- Cellular- Made up of only one cell
eg: bacteria, fungi
Multi- Cellular- Made up of more than one cell.
eg: humans, animals and plants
What are the properties of a cell?
1) Cell is covered with a cell membrane
2) Cytoplasm is the living part of a cell
3) The Nucleus controls the working function of the cell ( it contains DNA)
4)The vacuole is an organelle with a membrane that holds liquid
5)The Mitochondria are organelles which are responsible for cellular energy.
Function of each organelle in cells
Mitochondria: is responsible for cellular energy, the powerhouse of a cell
Nucleus: controls the working and function of the cell and also contains chromosone.
Chloroplast: makes sugar from water and carbon dioxide.
Vacuole: an organelle with a membrane that holds liquid.
Cell membrane: allows substances to enter and exit the cell.
Cell Wall: protects and help support plant.
Cytoplasm: the living part of a cell.
Different types of Cell
Skin Cell: Cover the body and help to protect internal organs from damage.
Fat Cell: Store fat which insulate the body and is also a source of energy.
White Blood Cell: help to protect the body against disease.
Red Blood Cell: transport oxygen around the body.
Male Sex Cell: called sperm, swim to the ouum(egg) where one of them fertilises it.
Female Sex Cell: called the ouum (egg) is fertilised when a sperm fuses it.
Cilicitied Cell: line with windpipe, cilia are rows of fine hair which sways back and forth. They sweep a covering layer murous which trap bacteria.
What is a Plant Tissue?
Plant Tissue is made up of cells that have the same function and structure.
What is Active Transport?
an energy-driven process where membrane proteins transport molecules across cells.
Types of Active Transport?
Active - the movement of ions or molecules across a cell membrane into a region of higher concentration, assisted by enzymes and requiring energy.
Passive- Passive transport is a type of membrane transport that does not require energy to move substances across cell membranes.
