Why has the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased over the past few hundred years?

The combustion of fossil, such as coal, oil and peat, has released carbon dioxide that was previously locked up within these fuels

Deforestation especially of the rain forests, has removed enormous amounts of photosynthesising biomass and so less carbon dioxide is being removed from the atmosphere.
