Inheritance And Selection Flashcards
Define phenotype
The observable characteristics of an organism (how the gene is expressed)
Define genotype.
The genetic composition of an organism
Define mutation
Any change to the genotype as a result of a change to the DNA
Define gene
Length of DNA on a chromosome normally coding for a particular polypeptide
Define allele
One form of a gene
Define locus
The position of a gene on a chromosome
What is meant when an organism is described as having multiple alleles?
When their gene has more than two allelic forms
What is meant by co-dominance
If both alleles contribute to the phenotype
What is meant by modification?
Any change to the phenotype that does not affect the genotype
(It is not inherited)
State the basic law of genetics
In diploid organisms characteristics are determined by alleles that occur in pairs. Only one of each pair of alleles can be present in a single gamete.
How many pairs of chromosomes do humans have?
23 pairs
