Nurtion, Body Weight And Homostasis Flashcards
What are the 3 energy uses within the body?
Basal metabolic rate, voluntary physical activity, diet induced thermogenesis.
What do living cells require energy for?
Biosynthetic work, osmotic work, electrical work, transport across gradients.
What is Marasmus?
A type of protein energy malnutirtion, commonly seen in children, where the child is experiencing muscle wasting, has dry hair, and it is common to see the child experiencing anaemia.
What is kwashiorkor?
Another protein energy malnutrition disorder, the child is aptheitc, ethargic and anorexic, has a generalised odema in the stomach, with a distended abdomen due to hepatomegaly (swollen liver) and oscites (accumulation of fluid) . Often seen in children displaced from breast feeding to a high carbohydrate diet with little protein.
How do you calculate a BMI?
Weight (kg)/ height squared
What do the different scores in a BMI mean?
35 severely obese
Define basal metabolism
Measure of the basal energy required to maintain life
