Early Christian Era (1 A.D. to 500 A.D.
With advent of Christianity, a greater emphasis on personal responsibility for the corporal and spiritual welfare of others.
Care of the sick was a means to fulfill this responsibility so nursing practice increasingly by religious orders.
Rise of organized care in almshouses, asylums, and hospitals.
Outside of religious orders, nursing care was performed by womenfolk.
Middle Ages (500 A.D. to 1500 A.D.)
general decline in both personal and community’s health
Health promotion activities - abandoned in the emphasis on Christian spirituality to the detriment of the body
Development of military/nursing orders in aid to crusaders (i.e., Knights Hospitalers of St. John of Jerusalem/ Knights of Malta, Knights Templar, Knights of the Teutonic Order)
In the late Middle Ages, because of crowding and poor sanitation in monasteries, nurses went into the community and many hospitals were built and staffed by religious orders of nurses
