Safe patient handling:
A
~ avoid twisting and bending at the waist
~ have patient assist with positioning when able
~ never try to move a patient up in bed by yourself
~ use mechanical lifts when available

Sharp injury protection (3):
A
~ never recap needles - always use safety lock
~ point needle away from you at all times
~ immediately dispose of needles in sharps approved container

What to do for a needle stick:
A
(1) stop what your doing & clean area with soap & water
(2) notify charge nurse/manager ( or per facility protocol)
(3) will have blood drawn for tests like HIV, hepatitis, etc.
(4) if patient positive for HIV or hepatitis, may be recommended to start prophylaxis med treatment
