Nurse Mike IV Fluids Flashcards
Hypotonic Fluids
Fluids go IN the cell causing the cell to swell
Remember hippos LOVE water
Hypotonic Fluids contain
a LOWER concentration of salt or solute than inside the cell
Hypotonic Fluids have a ___ osmolality
LOWER
Hypotonic Fluids include
1/2 - NS 0.45% NaCl
1/3 - NS - 0.33% NaCl
1/4 NS - 0.225% NaCL
AND
2.5% Dextrose in water
D5W Caution
NOT for ICP (intracranial pressure) patients
NOT for diabetics (risk for HYPERglycemia)
DSW
Isotonic in a bag
Hypotonic in the body
Hypotonic Fluids Functions
- Used for conditions that cause cellular dehydration (For example: hypernatremia )
- Diabetic Patients and DKA - do not use D5W
Nursing Interventions - Hypotonic
Not for ICP Patients
Give slowly (prevent cellular edema)
Watch for hypovolemia (risk) - tachycardia, low bp first signs
Cautious: Liver Disease, Trauma, & Burns
Hypertonic Fluids
Remember hyper people
fluid leaves the cells and causes the cell to skink
Hypertonic Fluids contain
a HIGHER concentration of salt than the fluid inside the cell
thick concentrated solutions
Hypertonic Fluids have a ___ osmolality
HIGHER
Hypertonic Fluid Solutions
3%
5%
D10W
D51/2NS
D5LR
D50W
Hypertonic Fluid functions
to draw fluids OUT of the cell into the vascular spaces (blood stream)
Hypertonic Fluid Uses
Hypovolemia
Heart Related - heat exhaustion
Peritonitis
Peritoneal Dialysis
Nursing Interventions - Hypertonic
Infuse slowly - can cause fluids volume overload
