You have to give a child an injection regularly. The child becomes frightened every time he sees you. He has started to become incontinent of urine despite being dry for a year.
Could this be a defense mechanism and if so, which one would this describe?
Regression, nurse = pain
You recognise that the child is fearful when he sees you and you allow him to play with a stethoscope while you administer the injection. You then let him choose a funny sticker to wear for being brave. By doing this you are rewarding him for his behaviour (allowing you to give him the injection). He becomes less fearful of you in future.
How would describe your actions and his response in relation to psychological theory?
Behavioural theory – reinforcement
groups. How does a structural explanation differ from a cultural explanation?
Structural explanation focuses on the lack resources available, cultural looks at the environmental factors. Structural is reactive.
