Numerical measures Flashcards
Mean
Sum of all the data divided by the number of data
Median
Value in the middle of all the pieces of data
Mode
Most common data value
Range
Difference between highest and lowest value
Lower quartile
25th percentile of the data
Upper quartile
75th percentile of the data
Interquartile range
Difference between upper and lower quartile
Discrete data
Data which can be counted
Continuous data
Data which can take any value
What is y bar?
The mean of all the y values
What is sigma y?
Standard deviation of the y values
Outlier
Extreme piece of data which differs significantly from the other data values
Advantage for mode
Can be used for non numerical data
Disadvantage for mode
Not very informative if frequencies are low
Advantage for median
Not affected by outliers
