A system that uses distinct symbols to represent a number

what is the difference between positional and nonpositional number systems?
A
In a positional system, every symbol that takes up a position represents a value, unlike non-positional which only has a limited number of symbols which when the symbol occupies a position it does not mean that symbol has that value.
