What is a network?
An interconnection of devices capable of communication.
What is a LAN? (local area network)
Privately owned networks that connect some hosts in a single office, building, or campus.
What does each host have in a LAN?
AN identifier and an address.
What is a WAN? (wide area network)
A wan is a large version of a LAN that can expand across states, countries, or worlds. It interconnects switches, routers, or modems instead of hosts. It is normally owned by a communication company and leased by organizations that use it.
What are the two types of WANs?
point-to-point WANS and switched WANS.
What are point-to-point WANs?
A network that connects two communicating devices through a transmission medium.
What is a switched WAN?
A network with more than two ends usually a combination of several point-to-point WANs that are connected by switches.
