Number sense week 3 Flashcards
What is a polynomial?
an algebraic expression whose terms are separated by addition (+) or subtraction (-)
classification for a single term polynomial:
Monomial
classification for a two-term polynomial:
Binomial
classification for a three-term polynomial:
Trinomial
classification for a polynomial with more than 3 terms:
n-term polynomial
What are the two ways polynomials can be classified?
By degree (exponents), or by number of terms
How do we find the degree in a monomial?
Add up all exponents
Give an example of finding the degree of the monomial:
4x^2
4x^2
= degree of 2
Give an example of finding the degree of the monomial:
3xyz
3 x^1 y^1 z^1
= degree of 3
How do we find the degree in a polynomial?
Find the highest term exponent sum
Give an example of finding the degree of the polynomial:
4x^2y - 5x^2y^4
( 4x^2y ) - ( 5x^2y^4 )
( degree: 3 ) - ( degree: 6 )
degree of 6
How do we collect like terms?
Combine terms with the same variable and the same degree (exponent)
List rules for collecting like terms:
- collect alphabetically (1a - 2a + 1b - 2b…)
- ordered by highest degree exponent if the variable is the same (x^3 - x^2 + x…)
Collect the like terms:
3x - 4y + 8x - 3y
3x - 4y + 8x - 3y
3x + 8x - 4y - 3y
= 11x - 7y
