Nuetralisation Flashcards
What is the definition of neutralisation
Neutralisation is the reaction between an a acid and an alkali producing a salt and water
What are the three most common acids and the salts they produce
Hydrochloric acid=chloride
Sulfuric acid =sulfate
Nitric acid =nitrate
What is a base
A base is a substance that reacts with an acid producing a salt and water
What is an alkali in terms of a base
An alkali is a special type of base that will dissolve in water/is a soluble base(metal hydroxide)
Name 5 common bases
Sodium hydroxide
Calcium oxide
Potassium hydroxide
Lithium oxide
Copper oxide
Which of the following are alkali:
Sodium hydroxide
potassium hydroxide
Copper oxide
lithium oxide
calcium oxide
Sodium hydroxide
Potassium hydroxide
Name ways neutralisation in used in every day life
Farming-soil treatment- plants grow best a pH7-chemicals(lime) added to change the pH of the soil
Indigestion-Hydrochloric acid in our stomachs-too much acid creates indigestion-use a base(indigestion tablet) to neutralise.(Gaviscon/rennie)
Insect stings=
-bee sting=acid=neutralise using baking soda (base)
-wasp sting=alkali=neutralise with acid(vinegar)
MASH
Metal+acid -> salt+hydrogen
Acid+ alkali->
salt+water
Alkali being metal hydroxide
Acid+base->
Salt+water
Base bring a metal oxide
Acid+metal carbonate
Salt+water+carbon dioxide
Indicator
Is a chemical that gives a colour change in acidic,alkaline and neutral solution
Red litmus paper
Hydrochloric acid=red
Water=red
Sodium hydroxide =blue
Blue litmus paper
Hydrochloric acid=red
Water=bluel
Sodium hydroxide =blue
Universal indicator solution
Hydrochloric acid=red
Water=green
Sodium hydroxide =purple
Methyl orange
Hydrochloric acid=pink/red
Water=orange
Sodium hydroxide =yellow
Screened methyl orange
Hydrochloric acid=red/orange
Water=green
Sodium hydroxide =greeen
Phenolphthalein
Hydrochloric acid=colourless
Water=colourless
Sodium hydroxide =pink
What colourful chemicals change colour when mixed with an acid or alkali
Dyes
The colour chemicals/dyes are called
Indicators
An example of an indicator is litmus paper. We use it to test for
Acids or alkali
Blue litmus paper will turn red when mixed with an acid
Red litmus paper will turn blue when mixed with an alkali
Where can we get colourful dyes from
Many flowers and fruit
Another type of indicator is universal solution. What is this
A mixture of different coloured chemicals. Which allows a more accurate testing of acids and alkalis.
What scale does universal solution use
pH scale
The colours match to a certain pH that ranges from 1to 14
