Nucleus: Flashcards
(27 cards)
what is Cystic Fibrosis:
mucus in lungs & intestines;
mutation (deletion) of 3 base pairs.
what is Sickle-Cell Anemia:
sickle shape red blood cells
which can not carry much oxygen; codominant
allele.
what is Hemophilia:
slow or no blood clotting; recessive
allele (sex-linked disorder).
what is Down Syndrome:
extra copy of chromosome 21
causing a form of mental retardation;
Normal 21: II-shaped (2 chromatids)
Down Syndrome 21: III-shaped (3 chromatids)
what is Karyotype:
picture of all chromosomes from
within a (body) cell
what is Good/Beneficial:
helps an organism to
better adapt to its environment;
ex: white vs. brown rabbit in Alaska,
Siberia
what is Neutral:
common; neither helpful or
harmful
what is Bad/Harmful:
CANCER; no fertilization,
dead embryo, dead fetus, dead newborn
(miscarriage); genetic disorders/defects
(Hemophilia, Cystic Fibrosis).
what is Substitution:
remove a base pair, then
in its place add a new base pair
what is Deletion:
remove a base pair only
what is Addition:
add a base pair
what is chemical
(ex: nicotine, gasoline)
what is
(ex: gamma rays, X rays)
what is
(ex: triple negative breast cancer)
what is
[transfats(banned 6/17/2015): french fries,
potato chips, fried chicken, peanut butter,
donuts]
what is Mutations and Sexual Reproduction
(meiotic crossover) produces the variation
(variety) seen in sexually reproducing
species.
what is Variation
allows a species to best adapt
to a rapidly changing environment thereby
increasing chance of survival.
what is Interesting FACT
In laboratory experiments, most mutations
are either neutral (= no effect on the
organism) or delterious (= harmful to the
organism). Rarely, are mutations beneficial
to the organisms. In these rare cases, they
are found to be SNP’s (= Single Nucleotide
Polymorphism) type mutations.
what is DN:
Review Lab Notes
what is OBJ:
Given lab SWBAT compare the main characteristics of
mitosis to meiosis with 80% accuracy.
what is ACT:
Review Lab Procedures (color pencils);
Work on Mitosis & Meiosis Lab
what is Human sex cell (gametes) =
23 chromosomes
what is Each human body cell = 46 chromosomes
46 chromosomes
