Nucleophiles and Electrophiles Flashcards
What is a nucleophile?
Nucleophiles are negatively charged ions or neutral molecules that are electron rich
Give an example of a nucleophile.
Cl-, Br-, OH-, CN-, NH3, and H2O
What type of atoms will nucleophiles be attracted to?
Nucleophiles are attracted towards atoms bearing a partial (Δ+) or full positive charge
Will nucleophiles accept or donate an electron pair to form a new covalent bond?
Nucleophiles are capable of donating an electron pair to form a new covalent bond
What is an electrophile?
Electrophiles are positively charged ions or neutral molecules that are electron deficient
Give an example of an electrophile.
H+, NO2+, and SO3
What type of atoms will electrophiles be attracted to?
Electrophiles are attracted towards atoms bearing a partial (Δ-) or full negative charge
Will electrophiles accept or donate an electron pair to form a new covalent bond?
Electrophiles are capable of accepting an electron pair to form a new covalent bond
