Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What is the monomer of DNA and RNA?
Nucleotide
Monomer = nucleotide
What are the polymers of DNA and RNA?
Polynucleotide DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid)
Polymer Polynucleotide DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) and RNA (ribonucleic acid)
What is the role of DNA?
To store gene information that’s all the info an organism needs to grow and develop
What is the role of RNA?
A copy of the DNA and transfers the genetic info into ribosome so that it can code for protein
What are the components of a DNA nucleotide?
Pentose sugar (deoxyribose), phosphate group, and a nitrogen containing base
How are polynucleotides created?
Via condensation reaction between pentose sugar and the phosphate group creating a phosphodiester bond
How are DNA molecules structured?
Double helix with two polynucleotides chains held together by hydrogen bonds between specific complementary bases
What are the complementary base pairs in DNA?
3 hydrogen bond link cytosine and guanine, 2 hydrogen bond link adenine and thymine
What are the organic bases in DNA nucleotides?
Thymine, cytosine, adenine, and guanine
What are the organic bases in RNA nucleotides?
Adenine, cytosine, guanine, and uracil
What is the difference in bases between DNA and RNA?
DNA has thymine whereas RNA uses uracil
What is the structure of RNA?
Single polynucleotide chain and relatively short
What dos RNA and DNA stand for?
RNA-ribonucleic acid
DNA -deoxyribonucleic acid
Who were the scientists credited for the discovery of dna molecule?
Watson and Crick
Rosery-first discoverd it as she froze dna molecule and hit a lot of X-rays in it
