Carboydrates Flashcards
What are the 3 sugar units of carbohydrates? And give examples of each
1) Monosaccharides
Examples = glucose, fructose, galactose
2) Disaccharides = maltose, sucrose, lactose
3) Polysaccharide = starch, cellulose, glycogen
What are examples of monosaccharides?
Glucose, fructose and Galactose
Monosaccharides include glucose, fructose, and galactose.
What are the differences between alpha-glucose and beta-glucose?
Alpha-glucose has OH at the bottom, while beta-glucose has OH at the top
Alpha-glucose and beta-glucose differ in the position of the OH group.
Which type of glucose has an easier time joining with alpha-glucose?
It’s easier for alpha glucose to join alpha glucose than to join beta glucose
Alpha glucose polymerization is not identical to beta polymerization.
What is an isomer and give an example?
Isomer -have the same chemical formula but different structures
Glucose
Alpha glucose
Beta glucose
