Nucleic Acids Flashcards
A polymer consisting of monomers called
Nucleotides
cells contain two types of nucleic acids:
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribbon nucleic acid (RNA)
each nucleotide monomer consists of three components
Sugar – ribose in RNA and dioxide ribose in DNA (Center), One phosphate group (Attached to sugars carbon atom), Nitrogenous base (Attached to opposite side of sugar)
Nitrogenous base:
adenine (A), guanine (G), thymine she(T), cytosine (C), or Uracil(U)
what nitrogenous spaces do DNA contain?
Adenine(A), Cytosine(C), Guanine(G), and Thymine(T)
what nitrogenous bases do RNA contain?
Adenine (A), Cytosine (C), Guanine (G) and Uracil (U)
hydrogen bonds between the bases, hold the two strands of nucleotides together:
A with T, C with G
is a double helix that symbol a spiral stair
A DNA polymer
is usually single stranded
RNA
it’s main function is to storage genetic information
DNA
One function of this is to enable cells to use the protein and coding information in DNA
RNA
Two groups of nitrogenous bases
Pyrimidines and purines
Purines
adenine and guanine
pyrimidines
cytosine, thymine, and uracil
