nuclear fission and fusion Flashcards
What is the binding energy of a nucleus?
The minimum energy required to completely separate a nucleus into its constituent protons and neutrons
What is nuclear fission?
A process in which a large nucleus splits into two smaller nuclei after absorbing a neutron
What is nuclear fusion?
The process in which two smaller nuclei join together to form one larger nucleus
What is induced fission?
nuclear fission occurring when a nucleus becomes unstable on absorbing another particle
What is a coolant?
A substance that removes the thermal energy produced by the reactions within the fission reactor
What is a control rod?
Rods made of material whose nuclei readily absorb neutrons, commonly boron or cadmium
What is a moderator?
A substance used to slow down the fast neutrons produced by the fission reactions so that they can propagate the fission reaction
