gravitational fields Flashcards
What is Kepler’s first law?
orbits are eliptical with the sun at one focus and the other focus is unoccupied
What is Kepler’s second law?
equal areas are swept in equal times
What is Kepler’s third law?
the radius of the orbit cubed is proportional to the time period squared
What is the gravitational field strength?
the gravitational force exerted per unit mass on a small object placed at a point within the field
Any spherical object can be modelled as
a point mass
What is Newton’s law of gravitation?
The force between two point masses is directly proportional to the product of the masses, and inversely proportional to the square of the seperation
In order to be geostationary orbit, a satellite must be
in orbit above the equator
rotate in the same direction of the earth’s rotation
have an orbital period of 24 hours
