Nuclear Flashcards
1
Q
Nuclide of an isotope
A
A nucleus is a nuclide of the isotope AZX if it is composed of Z protons and (A - Z) neutrons … where Z is the atomic number = proton number, and A is the mass number / nucleon number / number of Neutrons + Protons.
2
Q
State what is meant by an ‘isotope’
A
[Breithaupt] Isotopes of an element are atoms which have the same number of protons in each nucleus, but a different number of neutrons.
3
Q
Define the ‘atomic mass unit’
A
Atomic mass unit, u:: unified atomic mass constant; 1/12 th of the mass of an atom of the carbon isotope 126 C, equal to 1.661 x 10-27 kg.
