NUCELAR REACTIONS Flashcards
Nuclear reaction
a process that causes a nucleus to change, including alpha and beta decay
Isotope
have the same atomic number and belong to the same element but have different mass numbers.
Radioisotope
an isotope with a nucleus that may undergo a nuclear reaction
Radiotherapy
cancerous cells exposed to high levels of radiation to stop them from multiplying. Also damages healthy cells & leads to side effects.
Nuclear imaging
Radioisotopes (atoms that contain unstable combination of neutrons and protons) used to obtain detailed images of organs inside the body (i.e. PET scan)
HALF LIFE
The half-life of a radioisotope is the time it takes for half the nuclei to decay.
CARBON DATING
a method for judging the age of artefacts or fossils by analysing the amount of carbon-14 in the fossil.
