COMBUSTION AND CORROSION Flashcards
ENDOTHERMIC REACTION
A reaction that the system absorbs energy from its surroundings in the form of heat
EXOTHERMIC REACTIONS
A reaction that releases evergy from the system in the form of heat
COMBUSTION Reaction
Combustion happens when something reacts with oxygen (oxidation) causing it to burn or explode as it does so (i.e. bushfires)
Fuel
Anything that burns is referred to as fuel.
Complete combusion
Combustion reactions with an unlimited supply of oxygen
Clean reaction
produces carbon Dioxide- and water
Incomplete combusion
Occurs when oxygen supply is limited or the oxygen cannot mix properly with the fuel
Incomplete combustion creates other reactions to occur as a result (i.e. smoke)
creates carbon monoxide, (dirty reaction)
Role of combustion in climate change
Burning of gas, petrol, oil, coal and aviation fuel leads to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Incomplete combustion also releases carbon monoxide into the environment.
Corrosion
when a metal is exposed to air, water and other chemicals, it is an exothermic reaction
verdigiris
copper corrodes and it forms a green coating
tarnish
pure silver reacts with sulfur to form a black coating
