NST Term 3 Energy and sound Flashcards
What is Energy
Makes things move, happen or change
What is Source of energy
Something that we get energy from
What are Nutrients
Things in food that you need to live
Everything we use needs
Energy
What do living things use energy for?
To grow, to breathe, to move and to feed
What is a source of energy
Food
What does your muscles use when you run
Energy
where is energy stored
In food
What happens with food in our bodies
Food is broken down and changed to energy
Where does energy also come from?
From the sun
A source of energy
The sun
What do plants do with light energy
They make food
What do plants use to make food
Sunlight
What do plants use their energy for?
To grow
What is Transfer of Energy
How energy goes from one part of an energy change to another
What is an Energy Chain
The order of which energy goes from the sun, to a plant or animal
Two types of energy?
Light and heat
What types of energy does the sun give
Light and heat
What do plants do with light energy from the sun?
They turn it into energy that is stored in food.
Where do animals get their energy from
From their food
Example of an energy train
Sun - grass - cow - milk
Something we get energy from
Source
Substances in food that living things need to live, grow and stay healthy
Nutrients
What is the process by which energy goes from one part of and energy train to another
Energy transfer
What makes things happen, move or change
Energy
Where does my body get energy from
From the food I eat
The energy in food comes from?
The sun
Plants uses what type of energy from the sun to make food?
Light energy
What is a System
Something that has 2 or more parts that work together
What is Input of energy
energy that goes into a system to make it work
What is Output of energy
The energy that comes out of a system
Where do you find energy?
All around us
Sound is a type of what
Energy
Wind is a type of what?
Movement energy
Give an example of energy in sound that travels to our ear and we hear sound
A Radio
Give an example of heat energy
A heater making us warm
Give an example of light energy
Shining a torch to make light
Give an example of movement energy
Kicking a soccer ball
A source of energy
Something we get energy from
Name 2 sources of energy
Food is a source of energy for our bodies
The Sun is a source of energy for plants to make food
Give examples for sources of energy
Wood
Coal
Crude Oil
Natural Gas
what type of energy does a torch give
Light energy
What type of energy does a heater give
Heat energy
What type of energy does a radio give
Sound energy
When energy goes from a source of energy to where it is needed
Energy transfer
What is Energy Transfer
One type of energy is changed into another type
What is energy stored in
Wood, Food, Coal
What is a system
It is something that has 2 or more parts that work together to make something happen
Example of input energy
The paraffin you put in a lamp
Example of output energy
The light that shines from the lamp
What are electrical appliances
It’s appliances that use electricity to work
If you ride a bicycle…
- where does the input of energy come from
- What is the output energy
- from me pedaling the bike
2. Movement forward
Give the input and output energy of the following:
- Torch to help us see in the light
- A radio to listen to music
- Person playing a drum
- A wood fire to keep us warm and to help us see at night
input output
- Batteries Light
- Electricity Sound
- Muscle movement Sound
- Wood Heat and Light
What is a tuning fork
A metal object with 2 long arms. When you tap it, it makes a musical note
What is sound wave
The way sound travels through the air
What is an ear canal
A tube that connects the outside of the ear to the inside of the ear
What is an eardrum
A thin piece of skin inside your ear that vibrates when sound waves hit it
What is a nerve
A group of fibres that carries messages between your brain and a part of your body
How does sound energy move
It always moves away in all directions from the part that is vibrating
What happens to the air around an object when the object vibrates?
The air also vibrates
How do we hear
Sound waves travel through the air
The ear catches the sound wave
The sound wave travels along the ear canal
The sound wave hits the ear drum and makes it vibrate
Vibrations travel through the bones of the middle ear
Vibrations travel though the inner ear
A nerve takes the message to the brain which makes you hear the soundean
Can you sometimes hear and feel vibrations
Yes
Example of hearing and feeling vibrations
When a train goes past you, you hear the sound of the train as well as feel the vibrations on the floor
What does volume mean
How loud of soft sound is
What is pitch
How high or low a sound is
What is sound a form of?
A form of energy
Why do you think some sounds are louder than others
If you put a lot of energy in the output energy will be more. Like if you blow on a whistle hard the sound that comes out of it will be louder.
What happens when we turn up the volume of the TV
The speakers get more energy, that makes bigger vibrations and louder sound
What type of sound does very fast vibrations make?
High sounds
What type of sound do slower vibrations make?
Low and deep sounds
What is the measure of how high or how low sound is?
Pitch
The shape of an instrument affects what?
How high or how low sound is.
A string on a guitar stretched tight will make what sound
High sound
A loose string will make what sound
low sound
A short tube will make what sound
High sound
A long tube will make what sound
Low sound
