NST TERM 2 Flashcards
What does properties of metal mean
It means the quality of matter and material
What are the properties of metal
It is strong
It is hard
It is shiny
It can be hammered or beaten into shapes - it is malleable
It can be drawn into thin wire - It is ductile
It can melt at high temperatures
What are the properties of Iron
It is hard and strong
It is used to make tools, nails, wire fences and weapons
Problem: It rusts
What are the properties of Gold
It is a valuable metal
It is very malleable - nice to make Jewellery
It always shines
What are the properties of Silver
It is a valuable metal
been used for 8000 years
Shines brightly
You can make jewellery from it
What are the properties of Copper
It has been used since 6000BC
Makes ornaments and weapons
It conducts electricity
Is used for electric wires
What are the properties of Aluminium
It is very light and strong
It is used to make aircraft
It is the most metal on earth
What are the properties of Zinc
It is used to cover iron so that it does not rust
Waterbuckets are made with iron and covered with zinc
What does plated mean
When you cover cheap metal with a thin layer of expensive metal.
What are metals useful for
It is useful for conducting heat and for magnetism
What does it mean if something conducts heat
If you put a metal rod in a fire, not long after your hand will feel the heat. The metal rod is conducting heat. Metals are good conductors of heat.
Pots and pans have wooden or plastic handles otherwise your hands will burn from the conducting.
Why are pots and pans made from metal
Because it is a good heat conductor
What does magnetism mean
Some metals are magnetic
Metals that are attracted to magnets are magnetic
Are metals always magnets themselves
No
What will happen if a metal is non magnetic
It will not attract to a magnet
Which metals are magnetic
Nickel
Cobult
Iron
Steel
How does metals tarnish or rust
Air and water makes metal change
All metals start of shiny but go dull in air
We say metal tarnish or corrode (rust)
What does rust mean
Iron becomes reddish-brown and breaks into small bits
What metal does not corrode or rust
Gold
What metal easily rusts
Iron
What is the only metal that rusts
Iron
What are the properties of non metals
It breaks easily They are dull Poor heat conductors Not malleable Not ductile
What is polymer
Plastic, rubber and fabrics
