NST TERM 2 Flashcards
What does properties of metal mean
It means the quality of matter and material
What are the properties of metal
It is strong
It is hard
It is shiny
It can be hammered or beaten into shapes - it is malleable
It can be drawn into thin wire - It is ductile
It can melt at high temperatures
What are the properties of Iron
It is hard and strong
It is used to make tools, nails, wire fences and weapons
Problem: It rusts
What are the properties of Gold
It is a valuable metal
It is very malleable - nice to make Jewellery
It always shines
What are the properties of Silver
It is a valuable metal
been used for 8000 years
Shines brightly
You can make jewellery from it
What are the properties of Copper
It has been used since 6000BC
Makes ornaments and weapons
It conducts electricity
Is used for electric wires
What are the properties of Aluminium
It is very light and strong
It is used to make aircraft
It is the most metal on earth
What are the properties of Zinc
It is used to cover iron so that it does not rust
Waterbuckets are made with iron and covered with zinc
What does plated mean
When you cover cheap metal with a thin layer of expensive metal.
What are metals useful for
It is useful for conducting heat and for magnetism
What does it mean if something conducts heat
If you put a metal rod in a fire, not long after your hand will feel the heat. The metal rod is conducting heat. Metals are good conductors of heat.
Pots and pans have wooden or plastic handles otherwise your hands will burn from the conducting.
Why are pots and pans made from metal
Because it is a good heat conductor
What does magnetism mean
Some metals are magnetic
Metals that are attracted to magnets are magnetic
Are metals always magnets themselves
No
What will happen if a metal is non magnetic
It will not attract to a magnet
Which metals are magnetic
Nickel
Cobult
Iron
Steel
How does metals tarnish or rust
Air and water makes metal change
All metals start of shiny but go dull in air
We say metal tarnish or corrode (rust)
What does rust mean
Iron becomes reddish-brown and breaks into small bits
What metal does not corrode or rust
Gold
What metal easily rusts
Iron
What is the only metal that rusts
Iron
What are the properties of non metals
It breaks easily They are dull Poor heat conductors Not malleable Not ductile
What is polymer
Plastic, rubber and fabrics
What is ceramic
Objects make from clay or sand
Give examples of non metals
Glass Rubber Sand Leather Clay Fabric Wood Water Wax
How can you stop iron and steel from rusting
Coat them in plastic
Paint them
Coat them in another metal that does not rust
Coat them with oil or grease
What does it mean to combine materials
We put materials together in a certain way
In which ways can we process materials
Mix and set
Cook
Coor or dry
What does mixing and setting mean
You mix materials that become hard after you mix it.
What is polyfilla
It is like plaster of paris and is used to fill cracks in the wall
What is concrete
It is sand, gravel and cement mixed with water
What is concrete used for
Roads
Foundations
Pillars
What does reinforced mean
It means to make something stronger
Concrete can be reinforced with iron bars when we build dams and bridges
What mixture is useful to shape and set in a particular shape
Cement
What is plaster of paris
It is make from gypsum
It is mixed with water to make a paste
It is malleable
Sets and becomes hard
What do you do with plaster of paris and water
Mix it
Set it
Make ornaments
What do you do with Polyfilla and water
Mix it
Make a paste
Fill cracks
set
What do you do with Cement, sand, gravel and water
Mix it
Makes concrete
What do you do with Flour and water
Mix it
Make a paste
Makes glue
What do you do with Clay and limestone
Heat it
Grind it
Make cement
What do you do with Jelly and hot water
Mix it
Cool it
Makes solid Jelly
What do you do with Clay
Shape it into blocks
Dry it in the air
Heat it to make it strong
Makes bricks
What is ore
A type of rock that contains minerals and metals
What is alloy
Two or more metals mixed together, or a metal mixed with a non metal
What does evaluate mean
To look at what you have done and think of how to do it better next time
What are factors
Things that play a role in a result
What is flexibility
How easily a material bends
What does brittle mean
Something easily breaks into pieces when it falls
What does magnetic mean
Attracted to a magnet
What does attracted mean
Pulled towards something
What does tarnish mean
A metal changing and going dull
What does corrode mean
A metal breaking down
What are ingredients
The list of raw materials that are selected to go into a mixture
What is a process
Change in different ways to get new materials or products with new properties
What are products
Something new and useful coming out of a process
What is a mixture
Something that is made by mixing things together
What is cement
a product made from clay and limestone that becomes hard when mixed with water
What is a paste
A thick mixture of a solid and a liquid.
What does dissolve mean
Mixes completely in water
