Q

What is NSI 4 about?

A

Provides guidance when trying to achieve safety from the system for personnel working on 275/400KV OHL’s, including terminal towers and earthwires. It doesnt cover 132KV work, Live work or cellular, it is the equivalent of an ACOP in law.

18
Q

What items are issued with a PFW?

A

Sufficient flags, wristlets, drain earths with earthing schedule

19
Q

State two ways of controlling a DrESS scheme?

A

Earthing schedule and card safe

20
Q

What is the minimum requirement for Tower Demarcation?

A

2 red pennants per arm, no more than 1m from the tower body.

21
Q

What is the procedure for the approach of a lightening storm?

A

Climb down and retreat 10m away from the tower and connected equipment, inform the NOC and any other working parties

22
Q

What do drain earths and all associated equipment need to be?

A

Type registered

23
Q

Name two types of earthing?

A

Point of work for voltage and through current for an alternative path.

24
Q

What can you do if there is no earthing scheme for the work you want to do?

A

Submit method and risk assessment with an F1 form (Engineers report) to request engineer sign on.

25
Q

Describe the DEC form use?

A

DEC1 application and removal, F2 register of earthing, DEC3 Final inspection.

26
Q

In what document does it detail the management of defective earth tapes?

A

TGN 215

27
Q

Where it is not reasonably practicable to repair the earth tape on the terminal tower you want to work on, what do you need in place?

A

A single DrESS

28
Q

When do circulating currents flow?

A

When the circuit is isolated and the primary earths are applied

29
Q

What is the highest amount of amps you may see flowing around an isolated and earthed circuit?

A

450A

30
Q

Where would you see 900 Amps?

A

In the double DrESS on a complex circuit and only in the DrESS itself at the point of complexity when conditions of the currents add up either side.

31
Q

How many earths per phase would you need for a double DrESS on quad conductors?

A

8 (150 Amps each)

32
Q

What is required for earthwire work on a terminal tower?

A

3 short drain earths connected to a sparrow plate. (450 Amps)

33
Q

When a DrESS scheme is controlled by an earthing schedule, who would this normally apply to?

A

A single working party (NG normally)

34
Q

When a card safe is used to control a DrESS scheme, who would this normally apply to?

A

Where there are more than one working party (Usually Contract works)

35
Q

Describe to me how circulating currents flow?

A

Draw out on paper a diagram of current flow between the subs

36
Q

If you chose to use reduced earthing on a tower and it was safe to do so, how would you control it?

A

Enter a sketch and description in the ‘Remarks ‘ section of the earthing schedule. This would also be recorded in your risk assessment and discussed at the toolbox talk.

37
Q

Do we use contractors earths?

A

Yes they provide their own but we issue them to the General foreman under a safety document and earthing schedule.

38
Q

On contractor works on a complex circuit, what would be stated in further precautions on the Master safety document?

A

1) .Double/single DrESS schemes applied on towers ** under PFW number ***.
2) .Drain earths shall be applied as directed by the recipient of this Master PFW in accordance with attached earthing schedule.

39
Q

On contractor works, what would be stated in further precautions on each multiple safety document associated with the Master?

A

Drain Earths to be applied as directed by Master safety document recipient in accordance with PFW number ** (Master document number)

40
Q

Would you use one of the multiple safety documents to set an NG team to work doing QA which states ‘Carry out painting works and associated activities’ ?

A

Yes, its noted in NSI 4, the NG QA teams will coordinate with the master document holder to ensure only towers within earthed sections are QA checked.

41
Q

What statement shall be written on the earthing schedules associated with the multiple safety documents?

A

“A daily check shall be made before work starts that appropriate drain earths are still in place. in accordance with NSI4 section 4 scheme 1 (3.1)”

42
Q

For induced voltage earthing, can the SAP use reduced earthing without the need for an F1 form?

A

Yes providing safety of persons is maintained

43
Q

For reduced earthing with DrESS schemes what does the SAP need to do?

A

Submit an F1 form to the TL
