NSAIDs Flashcards
An irreversible inhibitor and is particularly useful in preventing thrombotic events such as an MI or a stroke
Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin)
COX2 selective agent and is believed to have less potential to cause gastric ulceration
Celecoxib (Celebrex)
a non-selective COX inhibitor with a good therapeutic profile
Ibuprofen (Motrin etc)
What is the name for the following drugs? Dexamethasone, Hydrocortisone, Methylprednisolone, Prednisone
Corticosteroids
How do corticosteroids work?
They regulate gene transcription. They reduce white blood cells and there is reduced arachidonic acid liberation, resulting in suppression of both prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis.
What are some side effects of corticosteroids?
Osteoporosis, susceptibility to infection, avascular bone necrosis
What does prostaglandin E2 do?
Causes symptoms of inflammation: Edema, Pain, Redness, Warmth. Both COX inhibitors and corticosteroids inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
Blocks cyclooxygenase in the CNS, but not in the periphery. NOT anti-inflammatory. Both anti-pyretic and analgesic.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
