What is the nozzle?
A
the component where the gas leaving the turbine is further expanded to realise thrust

How is thrust obtained?
A
by expanding the gas turbine hot exhaust through a nozzle

What does the afterburner do?
A
adds heat to the exhaust gas further increasing its enthalpy

Why does the use of an afterburner have to be limited?
A
it consumes a lot of fuel

What is a ramjet?
A
*a ramjet has no moving parts and achieves compression of intake air by the forward speed of the vehicle
*supersonic air is slowed by a diffuser to speed similar to a turboject
*no turbine so not limited by material properties

What is a scramjet?
A
combustion is supersonic
this allows flight at high mach number
