Gas turbines and turboengines Flashcards
What is a gas turbine?
they are the core element in turbojets
their main function is to make available mechanical power to the propulsive system
What is a turbomachine?
a device where energy is exchanged between a working fluid and a series of rotary and stationary blades
What happens to energy in a compressor?
energy is supplied to the fluid in a compressor
What happens to energy in a turbine?
energy is withdrawn from the fluid
What is the third component in a gas turbine?
the combustion chamber
What happens in the combustion chamber?
energy is made available through a chemical reaction
How is thrust obtained?
when a gas turbine is eventually coupled with a suitable propulsor where the available mechanical power is what obtains the thrust
What does a gas turbine provide?
power
What does a propulsory provide?
thrust
What is a gas turbine made of?
*compressor
*turbine
*combustion chamber
What is the work required by the compressor provided by?
the turbine work
How is thrust generated in the turbojet engine?
thrust is generated by accelerating(expanding) the hot gas leaving the turbine through a propelling nozzle
What is the role of the gas turbine?
to provide hot gas with sufficiently high enthalpy to realise thrust at high altitudes and higher speeds than propeller-based aircrafts
What is multispooling?
an effective way to further improve the performance of a turbojet
What cycle does a gas turbine utilise?
a Brayton thermodynamic cycle
