Q

Provide context for ‘Cousin Kate’

A

The speaker, Christina Rossetti, was a 19th century poet whose work was best known within the Victorian era. Her views towards society were depicted within her poems, perceiving women’s roles and expectations to conform ‘moral standards’. This is shown in Cousin Kate, as the speaker had been with a nobleman who did not love her even though she loved him, but strove to strip her of her innocence and purity. Unlike the speaker, Cousin Kate doesn’t love the nobleman but instead desires his wealth and status. Out of the speakers relationship she has been made redundant with a child.

Q

Provide context for ‘Catrin’

A

Clarke is a welsh poet + playwright who has been awarded many honours. She has three children, two boys and a girl, therefore motherhood is a topic she has a lot of experience within. She writes about nature and utilises natural imagery. Within the poem she explored both the birth of her daughter, presumably Catrin, and the implications they face as the child grows older. It explores conflict within a maternal relationship, faced both by the child and mother.

Provide context of ‘No problem’

A

Benjamin Zephaniah was raised in Jamaica and Birmingham, England, but left school when he was 14. He was born in 1958 and is living as of this day. He holds many honorary university degrees from UK universities and his work contains rhythmical and lyrical forms of speech; derived from political movements. Within ‘No problem’ Zephaniah remains hopeful, optimistic but at the same time serious. He has been challenged with social expectations, stereotypes and forms of discrimination and remains true to how he, and coloured people, are not the issue, but instead, the ones perpetrating the abuse.
