A
a product consumed as part of the usual diet with demonstrated physiological benefits/ the ability to reduce the risk of chronic disease
may be either:
- inherently functional e.g tomatoes
- imposed functional e.g. benecol

a product isolated or purified from foods which is sold in medicinal form and has demonstrated physiological benefit e.g antioxidants

live microorganisms with benefits if administered in adequate amounts they must: - survive stomach acid and bile - establish residence in the intestines - impart health benefits
